China’s largest nuclear power plant adopts advanced safety measures

Nuclear security is a major focus for the industry worldwide.

At Qinshan, China’s first and largest nuclear power base, extra steps are taken for both precaution and remediation.
CCTV’s Zheng Yibing reports.

The Qinshan nuclear plant is in a small county on the coast of eastern Zhejiang province, some 100 kilometers (62 miles) southwest of Shanghai. To protect it from the natural forces of the sea, a 1.8-kilometer (1.1 miles) seawall was built.

Since 2011, Qinshan invested over $15 million in additional safety measures. Formed by reinforced concrete and metal plates, they can resist earthquakes, hurricanes and even aircrafts.

There’s even more protection inside the containment. Its safety standards are at the top of the range.

Nuclear security is important in a power plant. Every individual coming into work must pass through multi-layered security. An emergency response mechanism was created, and regular drills are compulsory.
