Nuclear Security Summit results in pledges, agreements

The nuclear security summit concluded in Washington on Friday with a joint communique. Dozens of presidents, prime ministers and delegations attended including China’s President Xi Jinping.

Xi made five pledges to make sure terrorists cannot get their hands on radioactive material. Experts said it shows China’s firm commitment.

“We have made nuclear security an important item in our general national security system and included it in the new national security law issued last year,” Tong Zhao and associate at the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center for Global Policy said. “In regard to specific operation, we are advancing legislation on atomic energy and nuclear safety which will provide comprehensive suggestions and requirements on nuclear security measures and standards.”
